The Veteran & Families Institute (VFI), led by Director Matt Fossey, provides research and expertise on issues affecting veterans and their families. Matt brings extensive experience from the UK voluntary sector, having worked with Mind and Rethink Mental Illness on the national anti-stigma campaign Time to Change. He chairs the National Veterans Offender Working Group, is a member of the DWP Veterans Working Group, a Senior Associate with the Centre for Mental Health, and vice-chair of Healthwatch Essex. He has widely published on veterans’ health, wellbeing, and mental health, including key collaborations with economist Michael Parsonage.

The VFI team includes academics researching critical areas such as post-operational stress management, limb loss, sexual violence, veterans in the criminal justice system, spousal employment, and mental health.

The Veterans Research Hub, hosted by VFI, offers a contemporary and authoritative repository of UK and international research on veterans and their families. It provides accessible resources to inform research, policy development, service delivery, and journalism, particularly focusing on transitions to civilian life.
